About the Persian
The Persian is one of the oldest pedigreed cat breeds, with roots in ancient Persia (modern-day Iran). Longhaired cats were brought to Europe from the Middle East in the 1600s, and Italian nobleman Pietro della Valle is often credited with introducing them to the West.
By the late 1800s, Persians had become one of the most popular show cats in Europe and North America. Today they're still one of the most recognizable and beloved breeds in the world.
Temperament and personality
Persians are calm, quiet, and famously docile. They're happiest curled up in a warm lap or sunbeam, and they don't demand much attention. Unlike Siamese or Bengals, they're content to lounge while their humans go about their day.
- Calm: Rarely jump, climb, or cause chaos.
- Affectionate: Love lap time and gentle cuddling.
- Quiet: Soft voices and rarely vocalize.
- Low-energy: Perfect for apartments or calm households.
Size and appearance
Persians are medium-sized cats, standing 10โ15 inches tall and weighing 7โ12 pounds. They have a distinctive round head, flat face, small ears, and a long, dense, flowing coat that comes in nearly every color and pattern.
Show-quality Persians have very flat faces (called "brachycephalic"), which can cause breathing and tear-duct issues. "Doll-face" Persians have slightly longer noses and fewer health problems.
Care and grooming
Persians require the most grooming of any common cat breed. Their coat needs daily brushing to prevent severe matting, plus regular professional grooming. Their eyes also need daily wiping to prevent tear staining.
Health-wise, they're prone to polycystic kidney disease (PKD), breathing difficulties, and dental problems. Their flat faces mean they need extra care during hot weather.
Is a Persian right for you?
Persians are ideal if you want a calm, affectionate lap cat and are willing to commit to daily grooming. They're not ideal for busy households, people who dislike shedding, or anyone not prepared for the maintenance.
