About the Bengal

The Bengal was created in the 1960s and 70s by crossing domestic cats with the Asian leopard cat (Prionailurus bengalensis). The goal was to combine the wild appearance of a leopard with the temperament of a domestic pet. After several generations, the breed was refined and officially recognized in the 1980s.

Today, Bengals are one of the most popular cat breeds in the world β€” prized for their striking rosetted coats and their dog-like personality.

Temperament and personality

Bengals are highly active, curious, and intelligent. They need constant entertainment β€” toys, puzzle feeders, climbing structures β€” or they'll find their own fun, usually involving your shelves or your curtains. They're also one of the few cat breeds that genuinely enjoy water.

Size and appearance

Bengals are medium to large cats, standing 8–10 inches tall and weighing 8–15 pounds. They have a long, muscular body, a thick tail, and a short, glossy coat featuring distinctive rosettes (spots with a darker outline) or marbled patterns.

Their coat can shimmer with a "glitter" effect, a trait prized by breeders and show judges.

Care and grooming

Bengals have short, low-maintenance coats that only need weekly brushing. Their high energy means they need plenty of vertical space and interactive toys.

Health-wise, they're generally healthy, though they can be prone to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), progressive retinal atrophy, and certain digestive sensitivities.

Is a Bengal right for you?

Bengals are ideal if you want an active, engaging, dog-like cat and have time for daily play. They're not ideal for quiet households, people who are away often, or anyone who wants a low-maintenance lap cat.
