About the Yorkshire Terrier

The Yorkshire Terrier was developed in northern England in the 1800s by Scottish weavers who moved to Yorkshire. They bred small terriers to hunt rats in the textile mills and coal mines, but over time the breed was refined into the tiny, silky-coated companion we know today.

Despite their delicate appearance, Yorkies retain the fearless, tenacious spirit of their working ancestors. They'll chase mice, bark at much larger dogs, and take on anything that threatens their territory.

Temperament and personality

Yorkies are affectionate with their families but wary of strangers, which makes them excellent little watchdogs. They can be stubborn, dramatic, and prone to small-dog syndrome โ€” barking at much larger dogs as if they were the same size.

Size and appearance

Yorkies stand 7โ€“8 inches tall and weigh only 4โ€“7 pounds. They have a silky, fine, human-like coat that comes in blue-and-tan, and it grows continuously โ€” meaning regular grooming is essential.

Most pet Yorkies are kept with a short "puppy cut," which is easier to maintain than the long show coat.

Exercise and care

Yorkies need 20โ€“30 minutes of daily walking plus indoor play. They're small enough to exercise indoors but still need real outdoor time for mental stimulation.

Health-wise, they're prone to dental problems, tracheal collapse, and luxating patellas. Daily tooth brushing matters more than for most breeds.

Is a Yorkshire Terrier right for you?

Yorkies are ideal if you want a small, portable, affectionate companion and are willing to commit to grooming. They're not ideal for families with very young children or for people who want a dog that's happy to be left alone all day.
