About the Poodle

The Poodle is one of the oldest and most intelligent dog breeds, originally developed in Germany as a water retriever โ€” the name comes from the German "Pudel," meaning "one who splashes in water." French breeders later refined the breed into the elegant companion we recognize today, which is why it's often called the "French Poodle."

Poodles come in three sizes: Toy (up to 10 inches), Miniature (10โ€“15 inches), and Standard (over 15 inches). All three share the same intelligence, curly coat, and athletic ability.

Temperament and personality

Poodles are consistently ranked as the second-smartest dog breed (behind the Border Collie). They learn new commands in as few as five repetitions and remember them for life. They're playful, affectionate, and instinctively social.

Size and appearance

Toy Poodles weigh 4โ€“6 pounds, Miniatures 10โ€“15 pounds, and Standards 45โ€“70 pounds. All have a dense, curly, hypoallergenic coat that comes in many solid colors โ€” white, black, apricot, cream, silver, and more.

That coat doesn't shed, but it does grow continuously โ€” meaning it needs professional grooming every 4โ€“6 weeks and daily brushing at home.

Exercise and care

Standard Poodles need 60+ minutes of daily exercise; Toys and Miniatures need 30โ€“45. All sizes love swimming, fetch, and brain games like puzzle feeders.

Health-wise, Poodles are generally healthy, though Standards can be prone to bloat and hip dysplasia. Their hypoallergenic coats make them a great choice for allergy sufferers.

Is a Poodle right for you?

Poodles are ideal if you want a highly trainable, affectionate dog and are willing to invest in regular grooming. They suit active individuals, families, and even first-time owners who put in the effort. They're not ideal if you want a low-maintenance coat.

๐Ÿ’ก Fun fact: The distinctive "poodle clip" โ€” the puffy hair around the chest and joints โ€” was originally functional, not fashionable. It kept the dog's joints warm while trimming the rest for swimming speed.
