About the Dachshund

The Dachshund โ€” literally "badger dog" in German โ€” was bred in Germany over 300 years ago to hunt badgers. Their long, low bodies let them slide into badger burrows, and their bold, tenacious personality gave them the courage to face an animal twice their size.

Dachshunds come in three coat types (smooth, longhaired, and wirehaired) and two sizes (standard and miniature). They've been family pets for over a century and remain one of the most popular breeds in the US and UK.

Temperament and personality

Dachshunds are bold, curious, and famously stubborn. They have a strong prey drive and a big personality in a small body. They bond deeply with their owners and can become quite protective โ€” often barking at anyone who approaches the door.

Size and appearance

Standard Dachshunds weigh 16โ€“32 pounds and stand 8โ€“9 inches tall. Miniatures weigh 11 pounds or less and stand 5โ€“6 inches. All have the signature long body and short legs, with a deep chest and paddle-shaped paws designed for digging.

Their coat comes in a wide variety of colors and patterns โ€” red, black-and-tan, chocolate, dapple, and more.

Exercise and care

Dachshunds need about 30โ€“45 minutes of daily exercise, split into short walks. Their long spine makes them prone to slipped discs, so they should avoid jumping off furniture and running up and down stairs. Ramps and pet stairs help.

Health-wise, they're also prone to obesity, dental issues, and a genetic condition called IVDD (intervertebral disc disease). Keeping them lean and active is essential.

Is a Dachshund right for you?

Dachshunds are ideal if you want a small, loyal, funny companion and are willing to invest in training and back-friendly routines. They're not ideal for families with very young children, or for people who want an off-leash running buddy.
