About the Chihuahua
The Chihuahua is the smallest dog breed in the world, named after the Mexican state of Chihuahua where it was discovered in the mid-1800s. Their ancestors likely include the Techichi, a small companion dog kept by the Toltec civilization as far back as the 9th century.
They come in two coat varieties โ smooth and longhaired โ but share the same larger-than-life personality. Chihuahuas have the largest brain-to-body ratio of any dog breed.
Temperament and personality
Chihuahuas are bold, alert, and fiercely devoted. They often bond intensely with one person and can be wary of everyone else. Their tiny size makes them defensive of personal space, which is why they have a reputation for nipping.
- Devoted: Often form a deep bond with a single person.
- Alert: Excellent little watchdogs.
- Bold: Will face down dogs ten times their size.
- Sensitive: Don't do well with rough handling or chaos.
Size and appearance
Chihuahuas stand 6โ9 inches tall and weigh only 2โ6 pounds. They have a rounded head, large ears, and either a smooth or long coat in dozens of colors โ fawn, black, chocolate, white, cream, and more.
Their tiny size makes them suitable for apartment living and even purse-carrying, though they still need real exercise.
Exercise and care
Chihuahuas need about 30 minutes of daily exercise โ short walks plus indoor play. Because they're so small, they can get most of their exercise indoors.
Health-wise, they're prone to dental issues, luxating patellas, and hypoglycemia (especially as puppies). Their tiny size also makes them vulnerable to injury from falls or rough handling.
Is a Chihuahua right for you?
Chihuahuas are ideal if you want a small, loyal, low-exercise companion and live in a smaller space. They're not ideal for families with very young children, since they're fragile and can be snappy when startled.
