About the Border Collie

The Border Collie was developed along the border between Scotland and England โ€” hence the name โ€” to herd sheep on the rugged hills of the Anglo-Scottish border. They were bred for intelligence, stamina, and an uncanny ability to read and control livestock with just a look โ€” the famous "eye."

Today, Border Collies consistently rank as the smartest dog breed in the world. They dominate agility, obedience, and sheepdog trials, and they're often used as search-and-rescue dogs.

Temperament and personality

Border Collies are intense, brilliant, and endlessly energetic. They need a job โ€” without one, they'll invent their own, often to the frustration of their owners. Their herding instinct is powerful enough that they'll try to herd anything that moves, including children and cars.

Size and appearance

Border Collies stand 18โ€“22 inches tall and weigh 30โ€“55 pounds. They have a medium-length double coat in black-and-white most commonly, but also red, blue, merle, and tricolor. Their intelligent, alert expression is one of their defining features.

Exercise and care

Border Collies need a lot โ€” think two hours of vigorous exercise plus mental work every day. Physical activity alone isn't enough; they need training, puzzles, and tasks that challenge their minds.

Health-wise, they're prone to hip dysplasia, epilepsy, and a genetic eye condition called Collie Eye Anomaly. Reputable breeders screen for these.

Is a Border Collie right for you?

Border Collies are ideal if you're an experienced owner with time for serious training, exercise, and mental stimulation. They excel in dog sports, farm work, and search-and-rescue. They're not ideal for first-time owners, apartments, or households without an active lifestyle.
